Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 31, 2026
At memenu, we take your privacy seriously. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our recipe management and meal planning service.
Quick summary of your rights
- ✓Access and download your data anytime
- ✓Correct inaccurate information
- ✓Delete your account and personal data
- ✓Object to certain processing
- ✓Take your data elsewhere (portability)
These rights are built into the app — you don't need to email us for most things.
1.Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your email address and display name. If you sign in through a third-party service (like Google or Apple), we receive basic profile information from that service — typically your name and email.
Recipe and Content Data
We store the recipes you save, create, or import. This includes ingredients, instructions, images, and any notes you add. We also store your meal plans, shopping lists, collections, and favorites.
Usage Information
We collect information about how you use memenu: which features you use, recipes you view, searches you perform, and actions you take. This helps us improve the service and provide personalized recommendations.
Device Information
We collect information about the devices you use to access memenu, including device type, operating system, browser type, and IP address. This helps us optimize the app for your device and troubleshoot issues.
Information from the Browser Extension
When you use our browser extension, we process webpage content to extract recipe information. How this works depends on your settings:
- Manual save: We only access pages where you actively click to save a recipe.
- Auto-detect (opt-in): If you enable recipe auto-detection, the extension scans pages you visit to identify recipes automatically. This helps you discover and save recipes more easily, and helps us build a more comprehensive recipe database for all users.
You can enable or disable auto-detect at any time in the extension settings. When disabled, we only process pages you explicitly choose to save.
2.How We Use Your Information
Under GDPR, we need a legal basis for each way we use your data. Here's how we process your information and why:
Providing and operating the service
We use your information to run memenu — storing your recipes, syncing across devices, generating shopping lists, and delivering the features you expect.
Legal basis: Contract performance — necessary to provide the service you signed up for.
Personalization and recommendations
We analyze your saved recipes, favorites, and browsing patterns to recommend recipes you might like. The more you use memenu, the better our suggestions become.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest — improving your experience. You can opt out in settings.
Improving our service
We use aggregated usage data to understand how people use memenu, identify problems, and decide what features to build next.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest — product improvement using anonymized data.
Communication
We send you important updates about your account and the service. With your consent, we may also send recipe suggestions and feature announcements. You can opt out of non-essential emails anytime.
Legal basis: Contract performance (service updates) and Consent (marketing emails).
Safety and security
We use your information to detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security threats. This includes monitoring for spam, fake accounts, and terms violations.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest — protecting our users and platform.
Advertising (free tier)
If you use memenu on our free tier, we show ads to support the service. We do not sell your personal information to advertisers.
Personalized ads: With your consent, we use your interests (based on recipe preferences) to show more relevant ads. If you don't consent to ad personalization, you'll still see ads — just generic ones based on page content rather than your activity.
Legal basis: Showing ads — Legitimate interest (supporting the free service). Ad personalization — Consent (you can opt out in cookie settings).
Legal compliance
We may use your information to comply with legal obligations, respond to lawful requests, and protect our rights.
Legal basis: Legal obligation and Legitimate interest.
3.Information Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We only share your data in these limited circumstances:
Service providers
We work with trusted companies that help us operate memenu. These include:
- Cloud hosting and storage providers
- Authentication and security services
- AI services for recipe extraction and recommendations
- Analytics to understand service usage
- Email delivery services
- Advertising networks (free tier only)
These providers only access your data to perform services on our behalf and are bound by confidentiality obligations.
Public recipes
When you make a recipe public, it becomes visible to other memenu users. Your display name is shown as the author. This is the default for free tier users — you can review visibility settings before publishing.
Groups and sharing
When you join a group or share recipes with others, those users can see the content you share and your display name.
Legal requirements
We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or government request. We may also disclose information to protect the rights, safety, or property of memenu, our users, or the public.
Business transfers
If memenu is acquired or merged with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We'll notify you of any such change.
4.Your Choices & Rights
We apply GDPR-level privacy rights to all users, regardless of where you live.
Access your data
You can view and download your personal data anytime from your account settings. This includes your profile, recipes, favorites, and activity history.
Correct your information
You can update your profile information directly in the app. If something can't be edited, contact us and we'll fix it.
Delete your account
When you delete your account:
- Your personal information is removed
- Public recipes you shared remain available under "Memenu Community" (since others may rely on them)
- Private recipes are deleted permanently
- Anonymized usage data is retained to improve recommendations
Data portability
You can export your data in a standard format to take elsewhere.
Object to processing
You can opt out of personalized recommendations and marketing communications. Some processing (like security monitoring) is necessary for the service to function.
Restrict processing
In certain situations, you can ask us to limit how we use your data while we resolve a concern.
Withdraw consent
Where we rely on your consent (like marketing emails), you can withdraw it anytime. This doesn't affect processing that occurred before withdrawal.
How to exercise your rights
Most actions are self-service in your account settings. For anything else, email privacy@memenu.io — we respond within 30 days.
5.Data Retention
We keep your data for as long as necessary to provide the service and fulfill the purposes described in this policy.
Account data
We retain your account information while your account is active. After you delete your account, we remove personal identifiers within 30 days. Some data may persist in backups for up to 90 days before being permanently deleted.
Recipe content
- Public recipes: When you share a recipe publicly, it becomes part of the memenu community. If you ever delete your account, your public recipes stay available for others who've saved or favorited them — they'll just appear under "Memenu Community" instead of your name.
- Private recipes (premium): These are yours to manage. Delete them anytime and they're gone permanently.
- Ending your premium subscription: Your private recipes stay private through the end of your subscription. After that, they'll become public so you don't lose access to them. If you'd rather not share them, you can delete them anytime before your subscription ends.
- Deleting your account: Before we finalize deletion, we'll ask what you'd like to do with any private recipes. You can delete them, or let them become public so they're still available to you and others.
Usage and behavioral data
We retain identifiable usage data for up to 26 months. After this period, the data is anonymized — meaning it cannot be linked back to you. Anonymized data is retained indefinitely to improve our recommendation systems for all users.
Communication records
If you contact us, we keep those records for up to 3 years to provide support and maintain records of our interactions.
6.Cookies & Tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, understand how you use memenu, and show relevant ads on the free tier.
Essential cookies are necessary for the service to work — like keeping you logged in and remembering your language preference. These can't be disabled.
Analytics and advertising cookies help us improve the service and support it through ads. You can manage your preferences for these cookies at any time.
For full details on the cookies we use, how long they last, and how to control them, please see our Cookie Policy.
7.International Transfers
Memenu stores your data in the European Union (Sweden). We've chosen EU-based infrastructure to provide strong privacy protections under European law.
Some of our service providers operate globally. When your data is processed outside the EU, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place:
- Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission
- Adequacy decisions for countries the EU recognizes as providing adequate protection
- Additional technical measures where needed
Regardless of where your data is processed, we apply the same privacy standards described in this policy.
8.Children's Privacy
Memenu is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under this age.
If you're a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@memenu.io. We'll promptly delete the information and close the account.
If we discover we've collected information from a child under 16, we'll delete it as quickly as possible.
9.Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make changes:
- Minor changes (clarifications, formatting): We update the "Last updated" date at the top.
- Significant changes (new data uses, changed rights): We notify you by email or through a notice in the app before the changes take effect.
We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of memenu after changes become effective means you accept the updated policy.
Previous versions of this policy are available upon request.
